This is why you buy a heat pump that is designed to meet the full heat demand at -5C. Criticisms about heat pumps are about incorrectly sized heat pumps, poor installation and poor heating design not the technology its self.

I agree the idea of heat pumps is excellent especially as they mainly run at over 100% efficiently but they are not suitable for everyone, eg people who can't afford them.

I'd love one but I can guarantee a box outside that looks "technical" or has a fan running in it (the house) and it would attract a lot of attention from the local yobs and thieves.

As above this thread has taken a tangent. I only posted the OP as this time of year the question tends to pop up asking which type of heater is most efficient.

As previously said by Cardew, its to warn people about getting drawn into spending huge amounts of money unnecessarily when a much cheaper option will result in the same outcome.
