I wanted to buy a personalized mug for someone. Anyone got any experience of what they are like if they are real?

I'd say say go as far as the most well known printing company at the moment. Although they can usually be more expensive then the smaller companies.

    They advertise on telly

Check the terms carefully before ordering, especially the cheap offerings, as they may have vistaprint branding on them.

    I agree.

    Beware of the headline price.

They will charge you if you want the Vistaprint branding taken off (probably be on the bottom of the mug), and if you don't want to wait weeks for delivery, you'll have to pay extra if you want it delivered quicker.

They're legit. The quality is perfectly good. They're a pain in the rump.

I've used then for at least a decade now, off and on. At each stage they've been heavy on the 'special offer buy now' emails, with many confusing, conflicting campaigns. On the site, the cheap offer can become dearer by adding things you thought might be included (removing their branding, logo on a mug readable from both sides, heavier card, lamination, etc). The checkout process was/is designed to confuse with memberships of shopping clubs, extras dropped in your basket, popups saying 'why not add a personalised keyring for only £x if you click this box on the next 10 minutes only!' and such. There are, or certainly have been, some real bargains available, but much as with Ryanair don't expect the price you see to be the final price.

Go slowly, keep your eyes open and wits sharp and you should be pleased. I got quite good at navigating their offers and have a lot of freebies, although they're not so competitive any more.

Edit to add - more surprise charges - uploading a photo, PDF proof, so keep your wits about you :)

As others have said, they are legit, and their products are good quality, but beware of the Ryanair-style pricing structure. Most years I get a couple of calendars from them for my parents and in-laws ( they love to have piccies of the grandchildren around the place :) ).

So yes they're legit, possibly not the cheapest around, but I've personally got no complaints about them.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll have a look tomorrow evening and make a decision. I don't like when companies distort offers to such an extent as to make it confusing as to what it is you're actually getting so I'll have a quick dummy run and get to the checkout and see what its all about.

My main concern was just to keep my card details secure so at least I know that will be ok (within the remit of using it on the internet I guess ;))
  • If you are just buying one personalised mug I'd suggest checking ebay and Amazon as prices can be quite a bit cheaper than companies like Vistaprint, unless they have a really good offer on.
