LA / Hollywood Question

I apologise if this question might seem a wee bit naive.

We are visiting San Francisco again next year, and quite fancy a wee day trip down to see Hollywood Boulevard. I have avios to burn, so not a problem with flights. Plan to get an early morning flight, then a late night flight back, so should give us a good 7 or 8 hours to play with once we leave the airport, until we need to return back to the airport.

Can anyone recommend a safe and cheap way to get from the airport to Hollywood Boulevard?

I agree. The whole area is a bit of a dump and pretty sleazy. Why not go north of SF? That area is lovely.

Cool, I appreciate the honesty. I've never really thought of LA as a holiday destination as there isn't enough that interests me, but when I saw how cheap it was with avios, I couldn't resist a wee sneaky peek.

Hollywood Boulevard is exactly how I expected it to be. A street with Hollywood Stars on the pavement, full of tourists and street performers and the odd famous building.

Granted there's no way I'd travel down from San Francisco to see it, but if that's all the OP is expecting and they still want to see it then why not? Though it seems a shame to go all that way just for this! Do you really have zero interest in LA? If you're going to go to this much effort why not stay overnight and see a few of the sights?

A cab from LAX will cost about $60 each way. You might get a days car rental for less than that, but you'll have the hassle of getting the shuttle bus from the airport to the garage, and parking.

Have to agree with other posters though - the Stars aren't so great that they're worth a day trip. Plenty to do in San Francisco - get the bus (or hire a bike and cycle) to Sausalito, over the bridge, and get the ferry back to Fishermans Wharf.

Several companies offer day trips by coach from San Francisco to Yosemite National Park, or you could drive. It's about 175 miles each way, so you wouldn't get very long in the park but even a brief visit to one of the most beautiful places on Earth would be better than nothing. A multi-day trip staying in or near the park would let you see more of course.

Another possible multi-day trip is to head south down the coast road (California State Highway 1). The most scenic section is well south in the Big Sur area between Monterey and Morro Bay, but the section from San Francisco to Monterey is also good. I think you might be able to get a coach trip from San Francisco, or you could drive.

    Hope this helps.

I too was very disappointed. It is just a small street with some stars on the ground, nothing like it is shown on TV (usually when some something exciting is taking place!).

I went to visit a friend in LA, so didn't mind, I had a great time, but would have been gutted if I had wasted money (or points) just to see it.
