Regular clutter at Christmas

Options
I have spent the day getting the house ready for Christmas as I have a friend coming to stay tomorrow.

One thing that annoys me is all the usual ornaments, photos, vases etc. so I scooped them all up and hid them in the coffee table or elsewhere, to be taken out again when the place looks bare in January.

Is this what other people do or do you leave your normal bits and pieces out alongside Christmas stuff?

I do feel a bit guilty removing photos so I kept the one of my mum who died last year out but in a different place.

Possibly not much help but i don't think there are "rules"?

I won't have ornaments in the house and apart from a tree we don't have any xmas decs. So the pics on the mantelpiece etc stay where they are all year around.

Yes we put things away too for Xmas stuff but nice to have your mums pic - or put a small one in a frame and put on the tree.

I keep everything out as normal in the living room etc and only remove things if it's literally clutter eg piles of stuff that should be put away. I either return it to the proper places or in a hurry shove it into plastic bags and hide it- only to find it months later.

I put the Christmas items amongst my usual ornaments etc, but I suppose it all depends on how many decorations you have to put out and what sort they are eg if they are to be put on surfaces or walls and if there is enough clear space available.

I stuff the decorations in amongst the mases of vases and candles on my tv unit and mantel.
I think the room would look weird without them, even with all the Christmas tat around!

Thanks for your replies. I took a lot of my Christmas stuff to the charity shop as most of it was more suited to my last house than this, a more modern one. I also gave some to my grandsons who are allowed a little tree in their room for the first time. They are happy to put all sorts on their tree.

I have gone for a more simple look this year, a lot of white with some red. I bought some nice things in The White Company last January which look great. Simple things like fold up star/tree.bell.
  • I put away the usual stuff that occupies the mantelpiece and windowsill as I have lots of little Christmas trees that fill the mantle and I put various tea light/votives in the window along with some other Christmas ornaments. The only thing that stays is the clock. The dining table gets a festive table cloth, runner and centrepiece and no one's allowed to put any clutter on it!

Didn't even occur to me that ordinary ornaments etc were put away for Christmas.

When i put the garland on the mantle piece i move some of the ornaments onto the windowsill, or put some more on my shelving unit just so they don't break.
  • We put all our normal bits away for the christmas stuff including dvds to make room for christmas books, dvds and ornaments. It gives me a change to sort through the stuff to and then put limited amount back.

Yes, we put some of the usual daily bits and pieces away, we pack them into the boxes the Christmas stuff comes out of.
