Keep "Show personalised sales messages" set to "Yes" in the details of your online banking account.
And, if you're proud of it(!), make sure your salary/monthly income details are completed in the personal details section.
  • Thanks Bojan & YorkshireBoy for those recommendations, I have now updated them.

I go on honeymoon end of April next year so I doubt i'll be in a position to get a Clarity card by then but fingers crossed!

From many peoples accounts Halifax Clarity seems to have one of the toughest acceptance criterias of any mainstream card.
For as long as I can recall, a Halifax scoring systems massively favour existing customers with more than just a recent relationship.

Six months of salary credits, a few direct debits and operating the account in credit will, aligned to a clean credit file / being on the voters roll / having a stable job, make acceptance much more likely.

Hi - exactly the same thing happened to me after switching from RBS to Halifax. All my credit scores were perfect, so I wrote to halifax asking why I was rejected. They wrote back saying they wouldn't tell me why I was rejected, but after reviewing my case they offered me the clarity or regular MasterCard, so it is probably worth writing to them

I'll wait until nearer the time, if I get it I get it, if I don't I don't. I don't need it for any other reason that I thought it would be best for spending abroad so worst comes to worst, i'll just get a prepaid card as their normal Mastercard won't cut it.

I don't think switching from RBS was the reason, it was probably because I forgot I had only just got my Santander c/c in Aug and not earlier in the year like I thought.
  • Hello, do you own your own home or rent?

It might not be the case for everyone, but when I was renting I couldn't get a Clarity card, but when I bought my flat I could. Nothing else (salary, debt levels, no missed payments etc.) had changed as far as I could tell.

    It didn't effect anything.

Changing banks may have affected the OP's ability to gain a Clarity Credit card. The effect has been that the OP has not been successful.

Changing banks can certainly affect someone's ability to get a CC, but they can also effect it. For example, Halifax declined me for Clarity until after I switched to them, so switching to Halifax effected my ability to get a CC (as well as affecting it)

Hooray! Applied for this card again today and was accepted with a very good credit limit!

Happy I can go on honeymoon now with the very best credit card for spending! :)

Unlikely, but it could have tipped the balance if you were otherwise borderline.

I wouldn't be so certain, I have seen score cards that lend quite a lot of weight to age of bank account as it tends to be a good proxy for age. (Age is great indicator of risk but lenders aren't allowed to make decisions based off it as it is a protected EU characteristic, similar to how insurers can longer make decision based on gender).
Now whether this is legal or moral is another matter...
