TV Sound

I bought a cheap DVD/TV for the bedroom. Only wanted modest screen size and many places don't seem to sell anything below 32" now. I had only watched the one it was replacing twice in 7 years but like to have it available!
Anyhow, the sound is absolutely rubbish - really tinny.
Anyone any tips on how best to get better sound - it seems daft paying for a soundbar which will dwarf the TV in width.
Thanks.

Firstly does the TV have any audio outputs on the back? This can be a coaxial digital output or a digital optical output, OR a stereo phono L/R output. Once you've established that you will need a separate speaker system of some kind be it a dreaded soundbar (which you don't want) OR a full blown DVD or BluRay 5.1 home cinema audio system which you can connect to the audio output(s) as required.

TV stereo speakers are never that good for sound quality and are fairly limited in output and audio reproduction capabilities.0 -
Even a pair of cheapish PC speakers plugged into the headphone socket will probably be an improvement, and they could be hidden behind the TV0

The problem is;you're fighting a losing battle between the pc speaker volume controls and the tv's volume control with varying sound levels on different programming and adverts and you need a power supply for the speakers i.e. extra extension lead which leads to a spaghetti mess behind the tv.
Better with a separate sound system for good results;)0 -
I've got the same problem with my new black Friday 50"er. I have a basic pair of PC speakers on there at the moment but still having trouble with low bass. I'm looking at going 4.1/5.1 surround - with a box. Hopefully that'll do the trick. Works fantastic on my PC but obviously there is a much higher quality input.0

Have to say I bit the bullet and bought a sound bar, at least I now have loads of different settings which unfortunately my Wife doesn't like, she now suggests I must be going deaf, perhaps she's right.0

A 5.1 BluRay system equipped with Dolby Digital/DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II would be ideal for your tv, but DO make sure any system you buy outputs to all 6 speakers on optical or coaxial digital output with normal stereo TV soundtracks;some BluRay 5.1 systems don't and will only do stereo or DSP surround with stereo TV soundtracks but NOT true Dolby Pro Logic II modes on that broadcast material.
Dolby Pro Logic II movie mode gives the best surround sound effect on stereo TV broadcasts that aren't 5.1 in the HD channels and generally on stereo soundtracks within SD channels;it centralises dialogue to the middle, sends stereo left and right sound to the stereo pair and extraneous sounds to surround left speaker and surround right speaker at the back of the room.

Many thanks for the suggestions.
I have a Bose wave system in the bedroom, expensive clock CD/radio essentially, I think I might try hooking that up - it has fantastic sound quality.
The TV has all sorts of plugs and sockets on the back, haven't really investigated what they are, it came with 3 different sets of audio leads though so I'm guessing there are a range of choices.
That's tonight's job sorted then!
(Loved the, bought the soundbar, all sorts of choices - wife doesn't like any of them, response!)
Thanks again.0
