You're confusing debt and the account.

The account is the product she had with Halifax. She had an overdraft which was withdrawn. The 'account' isn't handed over for debt collection as such, the balance of the overdraft is. Your post isn't clear as to whether the account remained open with a zero overdraft.

It's entirely possible (but unusual and a bit daft) for Halifax to have handed the overdraft debt over to a collection agency. Wait a year and offer the same overdraft again. This doesn't necessarily mean that the collection agency will stop chasing the 'old debt. It simply means that Halifax is now generously offering her the opportunity to run up a whole load of new debt!

It is possible that Halifax have written off the old debt, but nothing in your post suggests that is what happens. And it sounds like she should politely decline the offer of an overdraft! (Or at least ask for a de minimis £100 overdraft to help with cash flow but not major debt)

I've never known a bank to just pass on just the overdraft the account would have gone with it as the account would have been defaulted not just the overdraft.

Yeah; that's why the first post is really confusing - how do you reinstate an overdraft to an account that apparently doesn't exist anymore?

That's what I'm trying to work out, however the more I read it the more confused I get.

Is anyone out there able to answer the basic questions regarding ownership of the account? Or does everyone come here now just to leave spiteful and mean spirited comments like nasty little internet trolls? This forum certainly isn't the helpful place it used to be.
You asked for advice on three questions and I answered the two of them that I felt able to, in an honest and constructive way. Sorry if you didn't like the answers but good luck anyway....
