John Lewis Ortho 1600 Mattress

We need a new kingsize mattress. After visiting a few stores, our favourite choice so far is the John Lewis Ortho 1600 Mattress. Their cheaper Ortho 1400 isn't as comfortable and their more expensive Ortho 1800 seems a little too hard.

My wife spent about an hour there today lying on various mattresses for 10 to 15 minutes and discussing the choices with an assistant. The assistant agreed that the 1600 seemed right for her. I've only briefly lain on it last week but the 1600 seemed fine for me. I'll be going back to spend more time trying it out before deciding.

The Ortho 1600 is currently £750 although the assistant kindly advised us that it would probably be reduced soon pre Christmas.

Does anyone have any experience with this mattress or the JL own range. They all seems to be better value than the ones we have seen in other stores. I generally trust JL.

At around that level of budget, can we do any better? We would go up to maybe £900 if that buys us a significantly better mattress.

Cheers.

He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

I'll try and post a little more later as I'm pushed for time at the moment.

Companies get own label stuff made for one reason and one reason alone, that's to make as much profit as possible. As you can't find the same product anywhere else for price comparison!

The mattress is made by Hypnos and a very quick 30 second search lead me to this mattress...http://www.landofbeds.co.uk/hypnos/mattresses/ortho-silver/king-size

Which admittedly is only a little cheaper it's hand side stitched, which a mattress of that price and quality should be.

If I where you I'd carry on looking for a bit.

This is now down to £650 for a limited time.

We will probably make our minds up in the next day or so.

It is between the JL one and a few similar Hypnos options in a local shop.

    Thanks for your advice PP.

Pinkypants is the bed expert - no pun intended, so I am sure she will point you in the right direction and probably a cheaper quality product.

I have a JL Ortho one. I don't know what model as it's probably 18 months old now and I am really happy with it as I like a firm.

Some of the people who have shared it with me.. (that sounds wrong but I am a male single parent and I've had a couple of relationships in that time) have felt it was too hard ( we are still on the mattress here by the way, in case there's any doubt!)

I have admit at times I have found it too firm around my hips when lay on my side but I think I've just got used to it. Probably worth testing them out by being on your side as I think that's when a firm mattress can be a bit too firm.
