Do a CTRL and Alt - are there any programmes running in the background?
Have you scanned for any nasties? Is your Anti virus and firewalls up to date and configured correctly?0 -
Sometimes a defrag can fix this
edit:
You might want to set your virtual memory to not use a paging file first, then reset it to System managed after.0 -

Just what I was going to say, also I think Microsoft have a patch for slow shutdown.0 -
Nice little link HERE with plenty of advice. All the above posts are pretty good advice but there is a host of other issues known as well
I have nothing better to do!!!!

Tried all of the above still no joy, but can shutdown using ctrl and alt
then shutdown from task manager0 -
Just hold in the power button for 5 seconds and it will shut down.
The reason it isn't working correctly is difficult to diagnose (you could use msconfig as a starting point) but if all that's a foreign language leave well alone.......0 -
I had a similar problem. Spy-bot search and destroy and AVG Anti-spy removed some crap and sytem worked much quicker and XP shutdown worked fine."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

It is a known problem with Windows XP and Microsoft has brought out a fix. User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
It worked for me when I had the same problem.
download and install from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en0 -
Just a wee word of caution to the above. This fix from Microsoft requires that Windows Genuine Advantage be run first to establish the validity of the users software. So, anyone with a dodgy copy could end up dis-advantaged!0
