Is the immersion working?

Our boiler has broken down -the repair man cannot come until Thursday. It is linked to a 210 litre cylinder and uses a Thermal store Hot Water system. I was encouraged to find a switch with a red light, apparently linked to an immersion heater . There is a noise when it is switched on but no sign of any even warm water yet. How long would a totally cold cylinder of this size take to produce some warm/hot water(it has been on over an hour now) or does it seem likely that this is a dud?(never used before)

Comments

  • Depends on design of tank, position of element, (top middle bottom )size and type of element, temperature of incoming water etc *mega flow fpr example would be anything from 85 mins to 250 mins other makes can take longer
  • Thank you, I am pleased to say that the water is starting to run warm after just over 2 hours.
  • So, the water is running fairly hot from the immersion heater.

    The boiler is switched off.

I go out for an hour or so. When I get back the radiators are fairly warm. The timer has automatically come on for its normal heating setting.

    The water now seems lukewarm.

So, what is happening here? Does the timer release a valve which lets the heated water from the cylinder into the radiators.? There is obviously no boiler or pump working.
  • Bump -any ideas?

On mine there is a valve which opens to provide water and/or heating. Look for a small silver box on the pipe work. Feel around the back to see if there is a slide switch which may need sliding across manually.

I'm no expert on the system you've described but I'd surmise that your hot water tank is now the hot water source for your CH ie a pseudo boiler. This means to me that the pump is running even though the boiler has not fired up, ie the water in the tank coil is drawing heat from the cylinder? Turn the pump off if so.
