Need to set up a DD quickly for Santander!

Hi,
I'm approaching the first month anniversary since opening my Santander 123 account (7th of the month), and I'm one direct debit short thanks to the 'change payment method' on my Scottish Power account not updating my payment day. I had changed my bank details and altered the payment date a couple of weeks ago to 3rd of the month from the 8th but when I logged on earlier today, it was all the old details. I changed them again but the date steadfastly remained the same. I'll have to ring them later about this, but I also now need to back myself up by setting up another direct debit that will start before my deadline. Sounds easy enough as there are plenty of charities out there but it looks like there would be a delay in collecting my first payment presumably due to the set up process. One thing I have done is change my current account on PayPal to Santander, which counts as a direct debit instruction but as no regular payments are taken I'm not sure whether this would help me in time. I could buy something and pay using PP but would this qualify? I have £20k in Santander and really don't want to miss this month's interest - it was the whole point!! Can anyone help?
Toby.

  • I may be mistaken but I think I read somewhere that Santander gives you a month's grace when setting up your DDs. Perhaps someone else can confirm (or otherwise).

P.S. This would have been better in the Banking Board rather than the Credit Card Board.

I can't remember whether the Direct Debits have to be used or just set up with Santander.

Anyway, you could simply fund your PayPal account using the Direct Debit, then transfer the money back. There are no fees for doing this.

Direct Debits usually take a while to set up. Most, maybe all, organisations that use them send written confirmation. Then give you notice before the Direct Debit is taken.
  • Is it possible to move a thread to a different board? I posted it in the wrong one by mistake.

A Board Guide might be around to do that later.

The latter - if two or more DDs show within the Santander online banking then OP is fine, the actual payment date is irrelevant.
