Police commissioner passed it up the chain and I had the following reply from the Police National Systems Office which is encouraging:

Thank-you for your email and suggestion. Your enquiry has been passed to me to respond to and I can confirm that this topic forms part of a wider debate we are holding with the Home Office. The aim of discussions is to make this information far more readily available to members of the public, free of charge on a Government / Home Office web site.

We also believe it will empower, or in the least allow members of the public to contribute and assist the Police Service in tackling stolen vehicle crime.

I hope this helps to assure you that work is in progress in order to find the most effective and efficient way of presenting this data to members of the public.

I will ensure that ACC D Pryde is sighted on your email in his capacity as ACPO Police National Computer Lead nationally.
