Biggleswade

Corsa 1000cc 03 hatchback.only doing 300 on full tank, airflow meter changed,fuel consumption test done. Garage drove 100 miles urban and motorway, but never turned of engine 53mpg. I drive short trips. I am disabled and cannot even drive 100 without stopping. I am getting 32 mpg. Now its using oil 1 litre evry 1000 miles, also say this is normal. Costing me a fortune garage say nothing is wrong its normal. So I haven't to drive short journeys, nor stop and start otherwise I need a petrol tanker following me and a oil tanker following the petrol tank. Realistic I cannot drive this car as its not economic any suggestions please help I am desperate.

Nowt wrong with it, the official figures are 38MPG round town so you aren't far off that. Stop start driving round town when the engine never warms up is always going to use a lot of petrol I'm afraid.

The Astra suffers from a similar oil loss for short stop/start journeys. I had a 1.8 Ecotec engine and changed it's use from short journeys to long distance and noted the drop in oil use. The fuel economy does look a little worringly low, I would say that no amount of money thrown at this Corsa is going to make you happy and it may be as easy to sell on and start again. I know it sounds drastic but you have done the AFM and diagnostics which will have hurt your pocket (equivilent to lots of mpg miles). Maybe try the car on optimax for one fill up when the car's tank is almost empty, and suggest the use of magnatec oil if you are doing more short journeys.

I used to be a driving instructor and initially used 1Ltr Corsa's which were changed every six months, I have to say the fuel consumption does sound about normal for your vehicle, stop start around town only got on average low thirties mpg. More worrying is the oil usage, I very rarely had to top up oil between services.

Vxl handbook (across the entire range) states that UP TO 1ltr per 1000 miles is normal. I never topped our astra up with that much myself.

Thanks everybody. Just what I thought. So annoyed garaged said this was a very economic car, both urban and motorway work. Definatly sold me a lemon. Only had it 11 weeks value now half of what I paid.

They didn't really sell you a lemon. 32 mpg is about right for stop-start journeys around town in a one litre car. Perhaps you would have been better off with a small diesel.

IT IS ECONOMIC AND YOU'VE NOT BEEN SOLD A LEMON.

Doing short trips, it's basically running on choke all the time so it will use more fuel.

No car is going to give you any better because of the type of run you do.

Stop being so bloody dramatic bleating on about having to tow a petrol tanker around with you. It's nothing of the sort. Not only that, the Govt give you £160+ a month to pay for your petrol. Think yourself lucky.

If you can't afford to run that, you can't afford to run a car fullstop. You're certainly not going to find anything any better than that.
