Can't recommend anywhere as I live here

however, I tend to point people who enquire at work to the manchester visitors centre

There are literally shedloads of central hotels in Manchester, so many to choose from. A good bet is around Portland Street, which has lots of hotels.
I recently had to go there for an interview and stayed overnight. I stayed in the Britannia Hotel Manchester. As central as you can get really. No problems with the hotel, a little 'dated' (most Britannia hotels are), but was by no means tatty, and was very clean. They also have the Britannia Sachas hotel round the corner which has leisure facilities. Both hotels have very reasonable rates. http://www.britanniahotels.com, with the added bonus of breakfast included, cost me less than a Travel Inn!
Also just down the road I noticed an Ibis, their website mentions 2, the Portland Street one and another one. http://www.accorhotels.com
Travelodge have 2 very central hotels http://www.travelodge.co.uk, Premier Travel Inn have 4 http://www.premiertravelinn.co.uk
Spilt for choice really, plenty in Manchester for all budgets. To give a good idea use http://www.laterooms.com for locations and http://www.hotelscomparison for good price comparisons.0 -
I stay overnight in manchester twice a month, and would recommend for shopping the Tulip Hotel, its right opposite the Trafford Centre. The hotel is modern, very clean and ample free parking. This is not a city centre location, but is only 5/10 mins away taxi ride.ELLIE BELLY :grouphug:0

I've stayed at the Premier Travel Inn on Portland St and the GMex one. Both are fine and reasonably located. (Staff were a bit dippy at the Portland St one though

I stayed in the pemier travalodge in salford, a little out of the way but right next to a tram stop - 10 mins later right in the middle of manchester.0

If you want central, then I agree with the Premier Travel Inn's at Gmex and Portland Street, also the Ibis on Portland Street. I live in Manchester, so have never had to stay in them, but they are central. Another option is the Jurys hotel (also close to Gmex).
If your coming at weekend (Fri, Sat and Sunday nights) then try having a look at the City Inn. This is a top quality hotel, but they do some fantastic deals at weekends that throw in cocktails etc. Have a look at their website, you might be lucky?
If you don't mind a pub (a gastro pub to be more honest), then I've heard good things said about the Ox, in Castlefield. This is a minute stroll from the Hilton (the massive skyscraper that dominates Manchesters skyline), and just off Deansgate (the better end to be staying). I often drink in this place, and if you like Coronation Street, they are always in having a drink after work.
Manchester has free buses called MetroShuttles. There are three lines, and you can hop on and off them as they do circular routes around the city. I'm sure that GMPTE have info on their website.0
