Do you have 2 switches at the wall for each storage heater ? If so make sure both are on as one will be the switch for the convector heater and the other will be for the storage heater part.

As far as the electrician saying he can't check their operation because of the time they are due to come on - how can any installation of storage heaters be tested then ?
  • OP, if your timerswitch is an old 24 analogue type, check the timer pointer at the bottom to see what time it thinks it is. The majority of these old switches I see are nowhere near the correct time and the cheap 7 hours could be anywhere in the 24 hour period even in the middle of the day. Other timer switches, Radioteleswitch and meters with built in clocks will be fairly accurate

I have lived in my flat for coming on 3 years. I am renting it from Milton Keynes Council.

    Hassle your Councillor.

    Name and shame on Twitter.

Try to get on Channel 4 Dispatches, BBC Panorama when they do poor councils cutting back and old people are freezing to death.

Offer to find an electrician, as opposed to the councillor's inbred cousin, if they will re-imburse you.

This i quite a horrible remark, when im actually asking for help and advice....
Im actually doing a lot about it.
I moved into the property in feb 2012.
That was 2012, it's now 2014. If you had been doing a 'lot' about it, it would be sorted by now. Sorry if you thought it was a horrible remark, but its the truth. There is no way I would go 2 years without heating! I would be complaining to absolutely everyone. Speak to the council, speak to citizens advice, speak to local councillor, etc. so many avenues.

Because i do currently work i keep all the windows and curtains closed during the day to maintain heat.
This can be counter productive. If the sun is shining you could be missing on solar gain. keep them closed if it is miserable, but open them up if it is sunny.

My economy 7 comes on at 1am, So they electrician says he can't test the circuit because there is no power to it until then. And they don't work at those hours.
Your electrician sounds rubbish, there is plenty he can do to test it. Get somebody competent to look at it.

But the circuit does work because it charges my hot water.
Okay, but the NSH's should be separate from the water heating. Do you have two consumer units, one for standard appliances and one for off-peak appliances?

If so you need to check all the fuses in the off-peak unit and make sure they are all ok. If they are, we will need to take a closer look at the NSH to make sure they are ok. Do the NSH have two switched spurs as asked above? One will be for the peak convector, the other will be for the off-peak storage elements. It is important that they are both switched to their 'ON' position.

Can you identify a model number for your NSH's? Or can you pick them out from an image on this page: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=storage+heaters&biw=1680&bih=880&noj=1&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=N459VMChGM3V7Ab8qYHwCg&sqi=2&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg

It's possible the NSH's are faulty, but even if they are they are simple beasts and very cheap and easy to repair.

How many NSH's do you have by the way?

I'm adamant i do not want to go home this year, I have even thought of buying convector heaters, but don't want to be spending £15 a day on electric.
Well then lets get this sorted. Even if you do not wish to speak to me again, there are users here who can guide you to getting your heating up and running again.
