Now tv box

Options
Sorry if this has been covered....

But the Now tv box is the bottom end Roku but crippled to take off some functionality, true?

I think it can be used after compulsory activation and free trial has lapsed, is this true?

Can it be used outside of the prescribed, reduced, Roku functionality of being mainly a Sky streaming device?

Now tv does have some things missing but it's the bargain of the century as far as I'm concerned. You are encouraged to register for the first month but there's no need to keep any subscription going to still use all the Non-Now Tv apps which include a good range of catchup apps, vevo, YouTube and a load of other stuff. You don't get access to the whole roku library but a lot of the mainstream stuff is there.

You can also do things like "cast" YouTube clips from your phone to tv which I find very useful.

The only bad thing I can say about it is that it only supports 720p and not full HD.

Why not buy a Roku and then subscribe to NowTV through it if you want it? That way you get NowTV and the full functionality of the Roku.

Yes the full Roku would be nice, but I assume the Roku 1 is still just 720p, and there's no RJ45 socket except on the Roku 3...

The Roku 1 is 1080p, the now TV is the older Roku LT with a restricted firmware to prevent you using Netflix. You only have a RJ45 on the Roku 3 or older XL although I find the wireless performace is fine with the Roku.

Is a possible alternative to run the Ruko app on a tablet that's connected to the tv via hdmi?

    Edit
just found that the app is only used to control a Roku box, not as a standalone program.

The Roku uses a custom Linux OS on their own hardware there is no way to run Roku apps on a tablet you can run apps such as Sky's on a tablet but they did have a block on you using the HDMI out with their app.

As worried Jim says - hacking the Sky Now TV (Roku) box, and installing Plex on it, makes it far more useful for a tiny amout of hassle.

I just acquired a Now TV box on Saturday - the ITV player only seems to list shows in the last 24 hours - is this correct?
