This seems to happen with monotonous regularity. I leave the place I'm selling spotless, and empty of everything except spare paint (if there is any) carefully labelled with the room it matches.

I move into somewhere that is filthy and full of junk.

Last time I moved I put my stuff into storage and stayed with a friend for two weeks so I had a week to clear out the old place properly and a week to clear out the new place... which was definitely needed!
  • It's a matter of pride and some people don't have any. The day we moved out, our house was cleaner than it had ever been. Even paid to have all the carpets shampooed. The buyers really appreciated it.

Thanks everyone. It appears the local council will pick up large items for free, although they probably won't take the fireplace surround if they classify it as 'rubble'. Since my original post I've also discovered two kids bicycles dumped down the side of the house and part of a trampoline. We spent about 5 hours cleaning the house from top to bottom yesterday, it was absolutely filthy! I can't imagine moving out of a house and not cleaning it.
