Feel jealous and it's silly!

At work we all have end of year meetings which come with a "score" out of 5 (1 is low and 5 is high).

I have worked there for some years but I am in a new role this year so expecting (and my boss has suggested) that I am likely to get a 3 or 4 which is fantastic and I am really pleased with it.

However, a close friend of mine works at the same place and her boss shared with me that she is likely to get either a 2 or even a 1 since they feel she is "outstanding". Don't get me wrong she is good but honestly she isn't outstanding - she works late because it suits her but this means she doesn't rush to get things done and she has openly admitted to me that she often goes days without even checking her emails.

I feel really jealous though which I know is silly because she is my friend! How can I feel less bitter about this?

(sorry if this makes me sound like I'm really spoilt but I honestly do work really hard too!)

  • Sorry confused here. If she is 'outstanding' she must be a 5 ?

If one is low then your colleague is viewed as being in outstanding need of having to pull her finger out and improve in her role. Why are you jealous of someone in that position?
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

Exactly. If she can't be professional by keeping these scores to herself, I wouldn't put too much value on her professional behaviour in deciding the scores, either.

I am confused too. Going by what you said, a 1 or 2 would be somewhere between rubbish and 'below average.'

Also, you class a 3 out of 5 as 'fantastic?' It sounds average to me. I would expect someone who is performing well to get a 4 for sure.

Also, as someone said above ^^^ why is this colleague's appraisal/score etc being discussed with you?

    Good management tactic.

Two excellent employees. Tell one the other employee is going to get a higher score and then watch them compete for the next year to try and better each other.
