Can BT charge me for not using service?

Options
Hi,
My BT contract expires on Dec 16, and as I don't want to continue using there product I cancelled it today. Even though I assumed I had to give 30 days notice I was told by the BT representative that they would cancel my service on the 16th and that I would get an email confirmation..
Well I have just received my email and not only does it say that my service will be stopped on the 29 Dec (which is acceptable) but I will then have to pay for another months service afterwards..?!? I also have to pay an extra £30 to cancel my broadband...?!? This was not something I was told about when I joined up...
If I knew of this I probably wouldn't have taken up my phone and broadband with them..
Surely if I cancel once my contract has finished they can't make me pay for an extra month can they..?
And can they expect me to pay an extra £30 for stopping a service when I wasn't aware of it..???

If you simply cease broadband then all companies charge the £30 cease fee but if you ask for a MAC code so you can swith to another ISP for Broadband then you don't pay this fee. what are you intending after your contract with BT ends.

Here is the BT page dealing with this:

Are you no longer going to use the phone line and broadband ??
  • Hi, I'm getting a local company to supply me with satellite broadband which is 50x faster than BT and cheaper. I don't need a phone line as I use my mobile. And the customer service I've had from BT is a disgrace.
So if the £30 fee is common place what about the extra month I've been told to pay after I've been cut off..? Can they charge me for a service they are not supplying..?
  • Good luck with satellite broadband which is "50 times" faster than BT (and cheaper).

I think you are about to be VERY disappointed.

Depending where highlandtrekker lives, it might very easily be 50 times faster than his BT Broadband - in our case any of the 20 Mbps would be.

Can't see any that would be cheaper though, particularly for any decent usage limit.

  • Well my current broadband speed which costs £40pm varies from 0.5 and 1.1 Mbps... I had the local company visit me last week and we got speed tests ranging from 45-60 Mbps. I've spoken to a couple of people who have had it for nearly a year and they've had no problems with it at all. There is a small set up cost (which I get back if I'm not happy within three months) and it costs £30pm. There's no long contract which I have to buy myself out of. It comes with a true unlimited usage and I get local 24hr support. The guy who runs it only lives 5 miles away....
It may sound too good to be true but I have no alternative to BT as no one else supplies Broadband where I live....
