PS3 Problem (no display)

We were given a fat PS3 which worked for a few weeks until the other day.
Basically, I have plugged it in so red light displays on PS3, HDMI lead is connected from PS3 to back of TV, have set TV to AV4.
When PS3 is turned on, it bleeps once and the green light comes on and there is a slight whirring noise as if it is about to start up but nothing comes on the screen, it stays black with AV4 in the top left.
I have read about holding the power button in until it beeps twice, or three times but, if i I hold the button in, the green light turns to red on the second beep.
I have tried turning it off and on using the rocker switch and tried the two beep thing again, no joy, tried turning the tv off, power off ant mains, still no joy.
Is it ready for the bin?

Normally when a PS3 fails you will get a flashing light to show there is a problem, the light won't stay solid green.
Has it been moved to a different TV recently that used different settings? It is quite common for it to remember those settings which then do no work on another TV. To test this follow the instructions below from the Sony support site.
While the PS3 system is in standby mode (red light on the front of the system), hold down the touch-sensitive On/Off button on the front of the system until the PS3 beeps a second time (approximately 5 seconds), then release it.0 -

Yes, I have tried that but it turns to red and goes into standby on the second beep.0 -
1st question - is the HDMI port you've plugged the PS3 into on the TV definitely labelled AV4?!0
