Can I pass on a guarantee to a new owner?

If I buy a brand new Amazon kindle fire hdx and sell it on completely unopened and still sealed will the 12 month warranty be passed on the next person who buys it or does the Amazon guarantee only apply to the person who actually bought the device from Amazon in the first place?

If anybody can clarify that I would be grateful.

  • Some warranties are transferable, others arent. Check their terms

You'd need to read the guarantee that came with it to see if it specified its only valid for the original purchaser or is transferrable.

Amazons site does not say other than to say its only valid when sold by an authorised retailer, of which you are not, but I'd suspect if you sold it new and sealed then Amazon will effectively transfer the warranty to whoever first uses it.

Sorry that's not cut and dried but it may be on the paperwork in the box.

If I was buying something "guarantee-able" as a gift, and needed to register the owner there and then in the shop, I'd register it under the recipient's name, so that they have the warranty. If you're mail-ordering and specify the recipient's name and address for delivery (and even choose the giftwrap option?), it should also then be in the recipient's name I'd have thought?

Hard to say, ultimately the warranty is for the contract in place between the vendor and purchaser (even for a non cost item such as a phone on a contract or a free gift). Legally guarantees don't have to be transferable at all, however most places do offer transfers as its goodwill to the customer.

Martin has commented before if you can write on the shops recipet it may become part of the terms but most of the time now the shop does not print a store receipt and does it electronically so this would be very difficult to do.
