No Bank Account anymore

12 months ago I purchased a new car on finance, they couldn't make the first payment on the date I request, but that was ok..i had that covered. After this first payment the finance company was informed that id like the date changing to match other my other out-goings , no problem they said. A week before the money was due out of the account they tried to take payment..of course the bank said no...2 days after this action they tried again..of course the funds still wernt available to them..so the bank refused again..the 3rd time it went on the correct date. The following month it happened again , in the meantime id informed the finance company of the date change AGAIN of which they verbally confirmed. Guess what happened..1 week in they tried to take a payment..the bank issued me with a 60 days notice of closure. It was closed on xmas eve 2013... I was left with an arm full of pressies and a declined card. The bank told me over the phone I could re apply within a 7 working day period to have the account reopened, then I was refused...so one group saying its ok..the other said no. 12 months on ive no bank account...I need some help PLEASE anyone...I just need a basic account to have my salary paid in..im having to use my girlfriends account to pay my car finance..which funny enough I never had a problem with again..HELP

Most people should be able to open a basic bank account, they are for people in similar situations to yourself.

Note these are not the same as the standard bank accounts/current accounts that banks advertise.

If you have no luck with these, it's probably worth taking a look at your credit report to see if there are any CIFAS (fraud) markers on there or anything else major, then asking for further advice. Statutory credit reports are £2 from Equifax and Experian, free from CallCredit via Noddle.

I think a couple of the banks operate a very strict three strikes and you're out policy. Certainly the Co-op do and I believe HSBC, though I'm open to correction on the latter.

HSBC have relaxed the 3 strike rule for their basic bank account (BBA). They will still send the closure letter but it can be over turned via branch or telephone if the customer has valid reason - and a bank worker decides that, unfortunately.

Its better that a bank worker makes the decision giving you at least a chance as the computer has already said no. Some will be stricter than others but lets face it. If you do try and get told no, nothing lost but if they say yes - great stuff.
  • I thought that the data protection act gave everyone the right to ask for a human to review the decision.

I would appeal and explain that the issues were due to the incorrect payment dates on the car finance, explain that you will be reclaiming any direct debt fees from them (if there were any) and the rejected payments were not supposed to be rejected.

The bank should be able to see when your income/outgoings come in so can verify that the money would have been there.

It is likely that the issue may be that you did not contact the bank and explain what was happening so they just assumed you were misusing the account somehow.

Assuming general account conduct is good and this was an exception I cannot see any reason why they should not let up open the account again.
