buyer wants to pay via bank transfer, how safe?

hi all, i have a ps4 on ebay listed as collection only, buy it now or best offer, have had a decent offer and the buyer wishes to pay via bank transfer and arrange own courier, how safe is this? i have never done bank transfer before so have no idea. he has roughly 5500 feedback mostly selling but some buying etc.. 100 percent rating. from his profile it looks like he buys and sells reduced designer clothing amongst other things, anyway not sure thats relevant. are there any drawbacks to this? thanks in advance

Wouldn't trust it. Buyers should read your payment options and should therefore know you don't accept bank transfers.
IIRC, with a bank transfer, you have to give far more info to the person paying you than they give you. I would only trust a close relative for bank transfers.

I'm sorry but I completely disagree and can only assume you are of the generation that has never had a cheque book. (there is more info on a cheque that you need to give out for a bank transfer)

OP Personally I would grab the offer with both hands, you save paypal fees and needless worries about later chargebacks.

All you need to do is give them your sort code and account number- make sure you check the payment is properly in your account (ie make sure it was not a cheque payment in) and then ship next day.

thanks for replies, i kind of assumed it was pretty safe as he has also said he wont arrange collection till payment is securely cleared etc (will i think actually withdraw the money to be on the safe side!) i have a web saver account that i dont really use , can i use that for the transfer? i am not sending it he is arranging his own courier etc.. i didnt think it would be much different to cheques etc.. (am of the younger cheque generation lol!) so it doesnt matter i take it that he will also have my address for collection, re having my bank details? thanks in advance again! the item states collection only and that im not taking paypal etc.. even though i have to state i will etc..

You will have to give him your address, he can't get any info at all from your bank details.

However, I hadn't realised this was a collection only item, it doesn't really make any difference to the bank transfer, but it does mean that you will still need to have to pack and send it properly as although he can't do a paypal chargeback if item is damaged he could still go to small claims if the item warranted it.

Also, if item can be couriered you may well have got a great deal more for it by offering it as a posted item, rather than collection only.

hi again, i stated collection only as thought that would be easier, his offer is the best i have had and dont honestly think i will get a better one etc.. if i put that i can post the item i then have to accept paypal and i dont want to as i have to wait for funds to be available etc.. and i dont want to do that this close to xmas etc.. as the sell your item doesnt give me the option for bank transfer anyway etc.. i had to cancel some sales (maternity stuff that was sold and then i found out i was pregnant! buyers were all perfectly fine but my seller rating dipped because i had to cancel the transactions etc.. refunds were given and all was good but it still seems to have affected my rating, as im not a big seller on there anyway, but buy lots!) so paying via paypal needed to be avoided etc..

i have told him my other half drives to london every night in his lorry as he delivers fruit and veg and the buyer said if it is local to him he is more than happy to collect from my other half and pay cash etc.. if thats possible, so he seems very legit to me (need to find out if hubby goes near where he lives as im carp at geography lol and hes still in bed) parcelling it up isnt a problem etc.. so if he arranges courier himself could he then claim that the item is bust? (it isnt currently as its brand new) etc.. and how would that work for me? surely if he is arranging courier and the transaction doesnt go through ebay that will be for him to sort out, if god forbid it did somehow get damaged in transit?? thanks for your help so far!

He wouldn't have claim through ebay- but if the item was expensive enough he could still try small claims, it is unlikely, but it is worth considering.

Idiot, bank transfers are free and super safe for the seller.
