I have an android phone with O2. I have google maps on my phone which I use for sat nav purposes. What I want to know is how much will it cost me to use this abroad- Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and France. I know my data costs in these countries is 19p per MB but have no idea how mang MB this application uses.
Are there any cheaper option- we don't have a 'normal' sat nav and don't know anyone who does.

Dont use Android but there are Sat Nav Apps for the iOS that allows you to download the maps in advance and so uses no data whilst you are abroad. I am sure therefore there are ones for Android too.0

Excellent product that gets better with each release.:beer:0 -
I've just installed NavFree and Here (Beta) in preparation for my upcoming trip. I've played with them a bit and they seem good (especially Here) but not used them in anger yet.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
I've used maps with me in Europe, it was great, had cycle paths on as well as roads and even the lidl's!! Make sure you download the area you are going first.http://maps.me/en/home0

I have Nav Free on both my android phone and tablet and find it very good considering it is free. The entire database resides on your phone so you need some space, or an sd card, for that but this means that there is no data cost as all you need is a GPS signal.
The tablet option is useful if you are happy for a passenger to view it and guide you otherwise you may find the screen is rolling around the dashboard a bit!
They charge for foreign map downloads but I think they are only about £1 per country.0 -

if you have an android, it can use gps without any internet but you need certain maps for it0 -
Google maps also has the option to download a step by step list of turns etc so you can set it up via Wifi.0

O2 offer O2 Travel which gives 50Mb of roaming data in Europe for £1.99/day. It seems that you have to get this organised on your account - it is not automatically charged at this rate.
It may be worth considering. I only use about 500Mb in a month so 50/day seems enough for you to keep your phone on as normal. Perhaps more expert people would like to comment?0
