Tradesman not responding

Dear all,

I awarded a job through the myhammer website. The tradesman requested a half-up-front deposit which I paid (£600) by BACS. But then he never turned up - and stopped communicating. He has not accepted a signed-for letter nor responded to emails. I wouldn't feel safe or confident visiting his address (it's domestic) which is in a fairly challenging social housing estate.

I'm aware that I have the Small Claims Court option but the process scares me - I'm not sure how confident I'd be talking to a judge (is that what happens?).

Are there any commercial debt collectors that would act on behalf of a consumer? I've just lots of B2B ones.

Any advice?

Thanks

S

    Thanks @Hollydays
I have no problem with myhammer, it's the tradesman I'm looking to collect the debt from.

Get the BBC's "Watchdog" or "Rogue Traders" on the case.
