overpaying TV licesne

Hello everyone.

I have come here seeking advice and guidance on what is a wrong doing regarding TV License.

In a nut shell, since 2011 I have been paying twice for my TV license that is £145x2 per year from 2011 until now. I have paid 4 years like this. It is only for 1 license.

It was only after checking my bank statements for the past 7 years I have noticed this. In 2011 I paid in full and quarterly. In 2012/2013/2014 I have been paying quarterly and monthly.

The years previous to this (2007/8/9/10) I was paying it direct debit fine without any issues then for some reason in 2011 I started paying it twice. I seem to remember being contacted in 2011 by TVL saying I needed to pay but I have no evidence of this.

After contacting TVL and providing evidence of my bank statements over the past 4 years and showing that I had been paying twice they have turned round to me and said I am not getting my money back.

I have rang Citizens advice and they said they cannot help me because TVL is a government arm and they are part of the government themselves.

Where can I go from here?

Thanks

Complain and make sure you spell it licence,

License is a verb in UK English.

    Check your finances more often.
  • Tell them you're going to stop watching TV and don't need a licence anymore and just watch replays on the internet.

If they are refusing to pay back 4 years worth of overpaid licence, if i were the OP, I'd damn well cancel the current licence and watch live tv for the next 4 years. After all, that's what they've paid for.

It would be the rest of my life not just 4 years for me but I am writing this on behalf of a friend who is quite submissive of authority and will just acquiesce to their response.
  • Just saw this thread whilst wandering through MSE.

One of the problems with TV Licensing(sic) is that the operation is now run by an Private company on behalf of the Government. In the past it was run, before they got privatised, by the Post Office.
In that way it was like a Government department.

I think the company is called Capita, who I believe run lots of 'departments' for the Government. I have hear in conversations that most of the jobs for TV Licensing are overseas!!!!
