Elderly Mum

  • Thanks everyone - she absolutely refuses any outside help though and, to be fair, does manage on her own - so far. Counting Pennies - have done all that you suggest but houses in the area just aren't selling so it is now lying empty as I am in a rented house near to Mum. I don't want to move in with Mum, Primrose, as I have 2 dogs and a cat - she finds them hard going. My rental is costing £800 a month so really isn't doable for much longer. If I had sold my other house for its value I could have bought in this area but have already reduced it substantially with no effect. Mum has good neighbours who would be happy to be emergency contacts, I guess.

We have similar concerns with my 93 years old MIL. She is determined to stay in her own home. She has always taken the approach that £500 spent on the home - magnifiers for reading, phones, aid call - is a week less in a home. She already has private cleaners, gardener, handyman

Well done that lady. Couldn't agree more.

Does anyone recall a thread a few weeks back, where Paulfoel from Wales was trying to get his Dad to spend money keeping clean? Dad was absolutely opposed to spending and money on e.g. a washing machine, although he wasn't short of the readies. Paul was tearing his hair out. Wish Paul's Dad was like your MIL!

Would you be able to rent out your house for a short let - say 6 months?
  • Hi Thorsoak - have already rented my house out for a year-complete disaster so don't want to do that again! Thanks for everyone's input.
