    It sounds as if he is gaining strength and I don't think it is impossible that the carny food was upsetting him. It does indeed get good reviews but being beef based and containing a fairly high % of offal means that quite a few cats do react to it.
    In addition to the other foods he is getting, I would make up some home made chicken broth. Get legs or chicken carcasses and simmer them for about an hour taking care not to boil dry. Cool and remove all the bones, feed the broth and boiled meat which is very healing for the gut and offers better hydration than plain water.
