Stair box cupboard removal

Hi all,

I've seen some similar posts on the internet but wanted to ask fora bit of advice. Just bought a house that has a small room with a stair box, i.e. a square raised box in the room that is actually the headroom for the stairs underneath. It has been made into a cupboard.

The door to the cupboard runs parallel to the banisters. The side of the cupboard is obviously at a right angle to this, i.e. in line with the width of the stair case below.

As far as I can see, the side of the cupboard is actually brick covered with plaster, rather than plasterboard. In my mind there is no way this side to the cupboard could bear any load, as there is nothing beneath it - just the empty space from the ceiling below to the staircase, but I wanted to sanity check that there should be no issue removing the cupboard and leaving just the stair box in place.

Any thoughts to the contrary?

Thanks!
Nick
