Does anyone know if Canada is the same as USA in immigration and having to pick up your bags and re-deposit them.
We are looking to fly to Miami and Air Canada are coming up quite a bit cheaper but changing in Canada with only just over an hour. there is no way I would book this in 90% of US airports (maybe Detroit)
Any one done it before ?

Depending on whether you transit through Toronto, Calgary or Vancouver the process is slightly different....and keeps being changed by "improvements".
In principle you do have to follow "US transit" signs and either pick up your luggage from a separate "transit" belt and then take it go through US immigration and then redeposit it, or the newer system is the same, but rather than pick up your bags, you are shown a screen image of them and have to confirm it is yours.
The big advantage of all this is that you land in the US as a domestic passenger, thus no immigration hassles at your final destination.
Best to allow at least two hours, preferably a bit more, for this process, just to be on the safe side.
I think Air Canada are better than any of the US airlines, but do avoid their high density 777W which has economy seating of 3-4-3 rather than the usual 3-3-3 or older, but better 2-5-2, as long as you get a 2.
The dreaded high density 777W has a 30% increase in passenger numbers over the previous 777W configuration!!!!!!!0
