Hive Heating Thermostat £179.99 (£20 Cheaper than British Gas) @ Currys

Hi was looking to get Hive installed after seeing the TV adverts over the last few months was going to buy it for £199 from Hive (British Gas) directly but I have noticed this morning you can get both the normal and hot water versions for £179.99 from Currys as part of their black friday deals.

You just buy the pack in store (and online by the looks of it) and it has everything in the pack you need to get yours installed.

Hope this helps anyone else looking for this.

  • Great product when its working but beware its a pain if it stops working, we have had ours since May but on Monday this week it stopped working leaving us without heating my first call to the helpline said thursday was the earliest they could get an engineer out ! The person i spoke to would not budge on this and would not let me speak to anyone else about it.
Luckily i spoke to a more helpful person on tuesday morning and we got an engineer out on Tuesday.
Its a consideration though as the advertising only mentions how convenient Hive is.

    Ah, so it is. Sorry!
  • Is the Hive more beneficial to have than using a timer on the system? I'm yet to be convinced that it's worth shelling out for. What are the benefits over using a timer?

I have one and it is a benefit if your plans change or you are away and come home unexpectedly(you can turn it on remotely when you are 50 miles away) or if you go away and either leave the heating on or forget to change the schedule. If none of those apply you may be better off with a wireless thermostat that doesn't work remotely. It will be cheaper.
  • Can you override Hive from the boiler controls?

It's more beneficial than a timer but more beneficial than both is not using a timer. Just switch the boiler on when you get home (if it is cold.)

Fancier multi-zone controls are worth it - but spending £180 to avoid flicking a switch on and off is a very high price to put on a few seconds of your time.

When we had ours installed at the end of 2013 we saw a reduction in gas usage compared to the original Honeywell thermostat of about 10%. That's by measuring kWh used per heat degree day.

There is a benefit in having different set temperatures/periods as well.
