New fence suggestions

I hope this is in the right place.

Most of the houses in our row have had their front garden turned in to parking. We haven't as we like the greenery outside our window.

The neighbours on one side are fine, but the neighbours on the other side keep reversing in to the fence that seperates their drive from our garden. Last time I checked it, it was broken. It's pretty old and tatty anyway so all it's done is bring forward the need to replace it.

Any suggestions either for a fence that can withstand regular knocks, or something that would discourage the bumping? Or do you think that some planting would work eg a shortish box hedge?

Thanks

ps, talking to the neighbours is not currently an option. we get on ok and would like it to stay that way!

I'd be tempted to go for a hedge from what you've described. It will withstand quite a bit of abuse once it's established. The only downside is that it's not an immediate fix - it'll take time to grow and fill out. Plus you'll need to keep it trimmed, though that shouldn't be too much trouble for a small hedge - just a trim once or twice a year.

concrete fence posts with precast concrete infill panels sounds like what you need

hopefully they wouldn't be to keen to run into a concrete fence, or even better a brick or block wall

Or a short wall with a hedge on your side of it - would save you having to go onto their property to keep it trimmed and also a wall might encourage them to drive a little better
  • See who has legal a responsibility over the boundary before you do anything.
Also speak to the neighbour and discuss, save problem in the future. Also can clarify at that stage who is responsible and have a discussion about why you are wanting to do what you want to do.

If all OK, a hedge sounds good (reduced damage to both parties if accidental scrape with car) Don't just think evergreen, consider Beech (Green or Copper or a double row one of each, nice contrast, geat colour Autumn to)
Debt is a symptom, solve the problem.
  • I'm not sure what could deter someone who drives that badly and clearly has no regard or pride in the condition of their vehicle! Like others have said a hedge is probably best to stand up to the damage of your idiot neighbours.
  • I'd suggest a low wall with fencing on top, if the wall is high enough to damage their car, their driving might improve. You'd have to agree it if it is on the boundary, but as far as I am aware (need to check), if you build it on your side then you don't need to have an agreement. Had a similar situation at my house although it didn't involve cars - the cement block boundary wall was falling apart, so I popped a note in the neighbours letter box telling them that we were willing to get the wall taken down, rebuilt in brick, and to let us know if they were ok with that (at the time we didn't really get on with them or not get on with them, just never really spoke to them). We got the note back saying fine as long as it didn't cost them anything. We did the work, and since then they've become a lot more chatty, so all is well.
