Help with buddy list, please.

I tried adding someone to my buddy list and a message came up saying that the name couldn't be found on the database, however, the member is still posting. I've looked, randomly, and found that quite a few members usernames don't appear on the members list. I noticed, on this board, that some people are having trouble adding to their ignore list, and I wondered whether it might be the same issue causing the trouble that I'm having, or whether it's just my incompetence.
