What's been your biggest problem when planning a trip?

Out of curiosity: What's been your biggest problems when planning a trip?

As in is there anything that annoys you in particular, for example when choosing where to go, or booking flights/accomodation, or chosing what to do?

I'm intrigued to know if the things that usually go on my nerves are common problems or if it's just me :) And also if there's a way to make travel planning easier and cheaper!

Deciding what not to see in a 4 week trip to New Zealand.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

Sitting in a airport waiting a connection.

  • Reading about the practicalities of a town/city. When you look on Wikitravel, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide its all hard work to understand, to keep the ferries, trains etc all in your head and work out connection times etc.

When you are actually there of course or when you have spent several hours looking at the options, what the guide says is soooo obvious but reading it on the page is tedious and confusing!!
  • Getting the wife to agree to a plan.

The wife throwing in geography bombs to a tight schedule. Standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona is not such a fine sight!

The wife deciding her feet don't reach the pedals in a Passat having driven it for an hour.

The wife saying "we'll hit the road at 8am every day" and then spending until 10am on motel wi-fi, forcing the end of each driving day into darkness.

Car hire, checking for prices, booking etc, then waiting at the desk for their attempts to sell you upgrades and insurance, and then the admin kerfuffle.

Airlines that brag about being in an alliance and that we're all friends and then they won't ticket with each other for certain itineraries.

Being annoyed by the fact I can't take what's in the advert as gospel given the fact holiday companies INSIST on advertising based on 2/4 sharing as clearly single people don't travel.

The rather annoying websites which advertise a price only to tell you on the last page before confirmation & paying that the airline they're using for the trip is Ryanair/Easyjet and your price just shot up £60 for luggage.

The hotels which advertise themselves as being in a location despite the fact they're not - for examples, search for hotels in New York, yeah Hackensack NJ is NOT New York....

When you get to the location & discover the "free wifi" is non-existant but the paid wifi is seemingly all there is & it's slower than a week in jail!

Not being able to afford to stay in the places to which I'd like to become accustomed :D
  • Thanks everyone!

Does anyone else experience this (or something similar): you want to book a trip online, but all booking websites want you to search by destination - but what if you don't really care where you go, you just want somewhere sunny on fixed dates, for example?

That's a problem I've had when I wanted to plan a holiday with friends... we ended up not going anywhere in the end :(
  • Having to pay a single room supplement.

You would think, in this day and age, with so many people staying single, they'd build hotels with plenty of single rooms.
