Best of luck lalman, it is a horrible thing to happen, especially if it comes out of the blue. Try and stay positive and (although it's easier said than done) don't take it as a reflection on you personally - these things can happen to anybody. While it's frustrating to have to dig in to hard-earned savings, it at least gives you some flexibility going forward.

Nothing much to report on the savings front, looks to be shaping up to be my worst month in a couple of years :/ although not disastrous and in part reflects that some major things are being pushed to next month for the end of the tax year.

Managed to add another £74 to the savings today making £3,497.

At the moment making money to save is getting rather addictive. :)

I'm clearly a real saddo, as I looked at £6.65 and immediately knew "ah, that's £2k in a TSB classic plus for January" :D:o

Lalman - sorry for the news. If you're in accountancy, I can only echo what the recruiters told you... you never stay out of a job for too long in that field (speaking from friends experience - market is v fluid if your resume doesn't have holes everywhere)

I can only wish you luck - and command you for saving up enough cash to give you some stability for the next 6months; I'd be very surprised if you needed to use it all.

I made the decision to pay off all of my unsecured debt today.

The outstanding balance on that loan is £33k and given that the rate is 5.75% - I really don't think I will be able to get 11% return from the stock market (the 5.75% is post tax) - hence it makes more sense to pay that balance off.

That means that I will not be able to reach my annual savings target of £75k.

Although annoying, I think this is the right decision.
