Can anyone recommend an effective spray to put on a new sofa to stop the cat scratching it. I am tempted by Feliway has anyone tried it, any help would be appreciated. He has plenty of toys a nice stable scratching post but when we got a new bed he scratched it every time he went in the bedroom and I would prefer the sofa to stay in a decent state  I hope someone has got a remedy thanks.

Put a scratch post next to the sofa. When he goes near the sofa direct him to the scratching post and reward.0

I second the above. Our kitty was scratching the carpet at the top and bottom of the stairs. We put scratching posts next to the top and bottom and he happily uses them instead of the carpet. Scratching posts are the right sort of material for them - far more so than carpets and upholstery! - so they'd rather use them.
We now have three scratching posts, a huge scratch barrel and a cat tree with loads of scratching bits and all get used regularly!0 -
We had to resort to sellotape as a temporary measure! We stuck some (sticky side out, obviously) on the one part of the sofa the cat was drawn to. They don't like the feeling of it so it's then easier to direct them to things they're allowed to scratch - like the handily located scratching post0

Thanks for all your replies, we have various scratch posts that I keep encouraging but he much prefers the sofa or bed. I scratch at the post, take treats to the post with him and have wiped catnip on them, he loves the catnip, but a good scratch no thanks!0

Try the double-sided tape, or just putting sellotape on it so the sticky side points out. Also try moving a scratching post right next to where he likes to scratch, so there's an alternative in the right location.0

We got some of this for our previous cat and it worked. When new cat started scratching the sofa, I fished out the double sided tape again. The first attempt I had problems peeling the backing off and it went on a bit lumpy. Miss Pixie decided this was worth investigating and started chewing at it. The second lot which was flatter on the sofa she clawed and chewed so I had to take it off....
So far we are having to shout sharply at her when she starts scratching. We're hoping that when we eventually start letting her out, life will become more interesting and the scratching inside may stop.

Use Feliway. Cats scratch to spread their scent. If you increase their scent in the house with Feliway it will discourage them from scratching, you can use a plug in or a spray for the furniture.NOT a NEWBIE!

\not sure if this will help but we got a spray called Scratch No More from Kleeneze, it definitely works on our rug in front of the telly, she used to scratch the life out of it but this stops her in her tracks. If you don't want to spray it directly onto the furniture, put a fleece on where she is attracted to and spray on that. It is Citrus based and cats don't like the smell.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thanks for the tips. I am still thinking of getting the feliway, and the double sided tape sounds good. I will have a good spray round the bed and hopefully it will work so I can start on the sofas when they arrive. Anyone know of any large cheap grey covers for sofas:rotfl:0
