Parcel I sent ended up on my doorstep 2 days after posting.

Hi all.
A little advice please.
I posted a parcel over a post office counter on Monday and obtained a proof of posting.
Today when I arrived home the same parcel was waiting for me in my porch!
There was nothing on the parcel so I am assuming they may have just read my sender address as the delivery address, however it was aslo right on the limit of the 16cm small parcel height so I thought perhaps it had been rejected and returned to sender, however there was no markings or notes on the parcel, it was exactly as I had sent it.
Has anyone else experienced this, and what do you think may be the most likely cause? I'll take it back to the post office tomorrow but if it is there error I assume they must have to re-send it at their cost?

What postcode is on your proof of posting?
I've had this happen before where they've put my return address as the postage address and I haven't noticed.
Not a lot you can do other than re send.0 -
Hi.
The proof of posting is to the correct address.
I'll just have another go tomorrow and see what they say. I'm hoping if there was a problem with the package they would have at least stuck an explaination to it?
Still at least the buyer is being very understanding about it• The rich buy assets.

They wouldn't return it after two days. If it's too big/underpaid they send a card to the sender asking for the difference. Probably an automated sorting machine has misread it ?0

I think that I've had one parcel and three letters that I've sent elsewhere that have ended up on my doormat instead of where they should have been.
RM have made a mistake, it's as simple as that. I just took them back to the Post Office, explained what had happened and they put them back into the system - I didn't have to pay again.0 -
I had this once so now I put the 'From' address on that back at an angle to the 'To' one on the front which so far has worked!0

If it was short postage they'd have attempted delivery and asked for a surcharge at the delivery address..0

I always do this too; also I put 'Sender' in red ink above my address, and omit my postcode so it doesn't go through the automatic system and accidentally get it sent back to me.0 -
I just put 'From: {surname}{house number}/{postcode}' (eg: From: Bloggs 1/AA1 1AA).
This gives them enough information to return it if required but makes it obvious it's not the 'To' address.0 -
Thanks Everyone.
Out of laziness I tend to send my RM eBay mail by printing out the PayPal packing slip, folding it in a well practiced strategic way so that the "to" and "from" details can be seen though a clear document wallet window, and then taking it to the post office.
I've sent about 50 parcels this way without incident so far, however it appears that I have simply fallen foul to the laws of probability on this occasion.• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

I did see the post office staff the other day looking at a parcel they had taken from someone, saying the reason it had come back was because the writing of the return address was in 16 inch letters black marker ink, very bold and the send address in biro on the other side.Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise.
