I want to do a balance transfer but I cut up the card ages ago so that we wouldn't use it-have been accepted for a 0% card but although I have the card number I don't have the expiry date which it says they need-will they be able to do the transfer without it?

Request a new card? Say it's lost. Typically it should take less than a week to arrive.
Can you do the balance transfer online? Some card companies ask for all sorts of details when you do a balance transfer via paper or phone. Usually they only want the card number when you do it online.
Alternatively, simply make up an expiry date. I doubt it's checked.0
