security tag on boots.

Hi all,
Rather strange query so not sure where to post this.

Just got back after doing the weekly shop at Mr. T. Bought a pair of boots along with the groceries. Going out later and want to wear them so very cross to find out that the cashier hasn't removed the security tag!!!! It's attached to the thing that pulls the zip up. Is there any way of getting it off or will I have to wear something else and trail back to Tesco at the weekend?

Also why didn't the tag make the security buzzer go off when I came out of the shop so I would have known that the tag was still on before coming home.

Pouring with rain so I hope I can get the tag off so many thanks to anyone who can help. kje.

If you've got your receipt is there a nearer friendly retailer who would remove it for you?

Most realty cop shows on TV who do shows about shoplifting, say that the people who nick stuff use a pair of wire cutters to cut the security tags off.

Give that a try or go back to store at weekend,

As for the security tag not tripping the alarms going off as you leave store, it just could be a faulty tag that was put on the boots.

I'd be more inclined to phone up Tesco and express my disappointment and dissatisfaction with this experience....and see if they can fix the problem and offer compensation to your journey. I think this is the least I'd expect if they'd caused me to go out of my way to have to return to the store in my own time, re-queue and on a Saturday when the shop is possibly at it's busiest....

Don't waste your time trying and possibly damaging things trying to get the tag off though. The sheer ££££££ amount that goes into each store security department per year should itself be enough to put anyone off trying to battle with their security!

I had this once. Tag came of surprisingly easily with wire cutters.

I used a pair of pliers both times it happened to me.
  • yeah i work in a supermarket, pair of pliers will just bring em off. you could complain but you won't achieve anything - just an apology. not all of them are active - hence why you probably didn't beep. they're that old that they simply de-activate over time :/

    Hi again,

    Thanks everybody for your suggestions.

Didn't have time to try to remove the tag before I went out, so don't know if wire cutters etc. do work so I'll probably just trail back to Tesco at the weekend - what a hassle!!!

Another lesson learned. In future I'll make sure I check that any tags are taken off, but to be honest when I bought the boots I didn't even realise that they were tagged 'cos they certainly weren't expensive! Anyway thanks again to all who tried to help. kje.
  • This happened to me once, tried to get the tag off at home, as purchase was made on a day out fifty miles away from home, with no store nearby. Blue dye burst from the tag when I eventually managed to get it off. Permanently dyed a part of the jumper.

I once bought a cardi in John Lewis, then set the alarm off in Superdrug because I didn't realise JL hadn't taken the tag off. Set SD alarms off again on the way out, then didn't on the way back in to JL to get tag removed. Work that one out!

Come to think of it, I've never heard JL's alarms go off - assuming they do leave the occasional tag on people's shopping, maybe they're stealth tags that alert security, but without a siren?
