Problems with a slow laptop

Lately I've been having problems with browsing on my laptop, a two year old Asus. Browsing is about all I use it for other than transferring pics and music.
The main problems are:
1) The browser frequently crashes and will say firefox/chrome (not responding) before getting stuck for ages
2)I will get a box popping up saying among other things 'unresponsive script' then another one with two options including 'stop script'.
3) The bufferring circle thing takes much longer
4)Videos crash or don't work at all
The first two problems are especially eveident when using twitter or loading a page with a video or many videos on it.
I've tried restarting the browsers, and while this helped initially it quickly reverted to type. What else can I do? Any anti virus or whatever I should be running? I use malware already, not sure if AVG is run out or not. Not spybot.
I tried some, though possibly not all (adcleaner) of the suggestions here but issues remain: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5114305
