EDF cannot locate my account.

I'm in need of a new bill, as my old one got lost in the black hole that is my house. Or my car. Or a coat somewhere.

Anyway, thought it'd be a relatively simple process. Go online, find the number, ring them, give them my address and they'll send out a bill.

Not so.

I rang them, gave them my address & name. Great. And they cannot locate my account. I have an active account for Gas which is prepay, but when the prepay gas meter was installed, by standard electricity account was closed down

After talking with the very unhelpful geordie lady on the telephone who informed me that I could have an estimated bill - based on previous accounts at the house in someone else's name - but cannot have an accurate one as they've failed to locate my meter reading from when I moved in.

The bill I had before was estimated, and I sent them meter readings every day for a month to correct it as it was over £200 for 4 days. 4 days when we weren't at home :rotfl:

So my guess is that the 'estimated' bill that geordie lady wants to send is going to be up there with the ridiculous levels of that previous bill.

What are my options now? They seem not to believe I've got an account with them, and to make it worse, they're telling me they have no record of the payments I've made to my account since my previous bill in June!

Did they randomly close my account when the June bill was paid, for no reason? If so, what are they going to do about the hundreds of pounds I've paid them since then?

I'm utterly dumbfounded.

Needless to say, it was 7:59 when I was talking to the ignorant and unhelpful lady, at which point she swore at me and hung up the phone. I called back and got the "this office is now closed" message. Seems she had plans that didn't involve her work.

Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention, I loaded the gas meter with £20 when I first got it installed, and it wiped it off in 10 minutes, despite not having any gas appliances running. I contacted them and they said it'd be credited to the gas card after a few times putting money on it. This happened - but it showed on the meter as extra 'emergency' credit, meaning I was going to have to be charged for it AGAIN to get out of 'emergency'... even though it's my money in the first place!
I can't add up.

I really need help/advice about what to do next to avoid more rip-offs from them when they eventually decide to bill me.

Looks like EDF have had a shocker here! Hope you can get it sorted though. :)

Now, as EDF say there is no live account for your property (or given your story, it may very well be with them, I don't think you can take the word of the advisor on that call), you need to find out who has the supply! Contact EDF again and ask about the current supplier, if not them (who it should be if you didn't transfer yourself) then they should still be able to look up the live supplier on the Ecoes database.

You need to get it sorted asap, because the longer it is left, the higher the bill will be. Remember even in situations like this, the supplier can still "backbill" for 12 months.

As suggested above ring back in, you may get someone more knowledgeable.

How are you paying for the electricity bill? You should be able to prove how much you’ve paid, your bank statements may also reference the account its been paid against.

If your old account has been closed this will still be on record.
