Interesting article about panic buying, supermarkets and their suppliers ...

@Greenglockenspiel Doors are expensive! I hadn't had to replace one in nearly twenty years and it was an eyeopener!

Last year we replaced the siding and front and back doors of our house. Steel doors, front door in a Craftmans style and back door with a half glass insert with the blinds in between the panes of glass. Both were painted green to match the house. Just under $6,000. $450 just to install each door. I figured for the price they should have installed them for free. They are lovely doors though.

Well, we're halfway through our two weeks of my most unusual Preparing For Winter - long hikes... last week was supposedly easy 3-5 mile walks, but sadly inaccurate-directions, missing signposting, damaged paths, etc., meant that on two days we covered 7 miles and some pretty demanding terrain... a total of 25 miles.
Next week we are going up some hills to do longer hikes, 7-8 miles or even 10, but we think rather simpler than the zigzagging "walks" which start and end at a small town or large pub, etc. We will go for some of the much more-often hiked walks in the South Shropshire Hills (always leaving details with my Dad by email so he knows where to tell MRT to come looking if we don't let him know we're home in reasonable time!). We do Monday, Tuesday, rest on Wednesday, then Thursday and Friday, and the weekend off.
It's our Preparation for Winter, to improve our fitness, especially our lungs and cv systems, and in my case to tackle my obesity (BMI of 35.5 - about 3 stone to lose just to become very overweight!), so that if we are unlucky enough to catch this damn virus, we stand a better chance of fighting it and not becoming severely debilitated or worse...
It doesn't matter how unfit you are - just go for a walk along your hallway and back a few times a day; start only ever using your upstairs loo when you're downstairs and vice versa; walk to the end of the road and back.... or go for hikes. We'd never done more than a couple of miles locally til Monday!
(Edit: it's also the last two weeks before My Intended returns to working from home, part-time to begin with, after 10 weeks off after his cancer surgery in the summer, so I'm determined he will be fitted than before the op before he returns to driving a desk!)2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

Our walks always end up being much longer than I expected but that's mainly down to DH who doesn't think anything under 5 miles counts as a walk. Since I know several members of our local MRT I'd hate to have to call them out, it would be so embarrassing although I do know accidents can happen to even the most experienced walker.
I'm trying to lose a bit of weight too. DH has lost a stone and he hasn't even been trying . We have been eating a more healthy diet in lockdown and he no longer has to face the temptation of all the biscuits and cakes that people leave in the office kitchen. I've lost about 9 lbs but do struggle. Having an underactive thyroid doesn't help.10 -
Laura_Elswhere - that's brilliant! I think to prepare our home, garden and store cupboards for winter but I have never given a thought to preparing "me".Not dim

Had to go to pay some cash into the bank this morning so took the opportunity to buy some M&S ready meals for my dad to stock up a bit in case of another lockdown. Their mini meals are just enough for him. He has trouble swallowing at times so they're just the right amount.2025 Fashion on the ration

That's one thing I really regret about this year, never getting to M&S for their food. I miss it.

Our local BP garage has a Simply M&S attached and you could get M&S stuff from there through Deliveroo all through lockdown, within about half an hour even when supermarket online delivery slots were unavailable. It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!8
