Preparing for Winter V

Snowing lightly on and off all day here but not lying. Yet!0

I am seeing, on rightmove, houses by streams, old dark houses with very low epc ratings, new houses with very tiny gardens and good energy ratings. Doh, it is so difficult to decide, even if I could find one I like. I keep remembering that tiny wee stream, the one that turned to a raging torrent and flooded the local houses0

Don't give up Kittie, we've got 5 to view next week all of which actually come up to the spec we've decided on. One of them actually was offered by the estate agent too, the other 4 are the result of hours or online reading via Rightmove. The market seems VERY slow at the moment with so few new properties coming on it makes me wonder if I'll still be doing the searches next winter???0

Its going to be cold again this week, so I have stoked the stove and it is heating hot water and as soon as that is done, it will switch over to CH. Its important to retain the warmth in the house fabric, either way it can take days to warm up if it gets over cold, so I would rather do it gradually
Thanks for those words of hope mrsLW. I have been looking at various areas away from my preferred area this weekend but am always drawn back. I am finding RM market info very useful too1 -
Just wanted to say thanks to Mrs LW for the advice re winter bedding plants. I've had a lovely display of red cyclamen and white pansies for a couple of months which still look really nice. I filled the spaces with conifer prunings which are still looking good and some holly and ivy cuttings which are looking tired now so I'll just replace them with some new bits of evergreen. So quite money saving.
I heard this idea of filling out with evergreen cuttings described as 'Canadian containers' a great idea which has worked well, thank you very much.
Now I'm going to plant some reserves up with some spring bedding so they'll be ready to exchange as the weather improves(I know that it's early but I like to look ahead to milder times)

Loaded up the car ready for an anticipated 20mile hike home, Cornwall is just not geared for snow, and financially it's probably not seen as worth doing been 8 years since the last couple of days disruption but today the sky is looking full of it.
If it settles I won't even bother trying to get my car out I will never get my little smart up the hill.
DH has taken a change of clothes to work in case of having to stay with a work colleague as he's to far to walk home.
We are prepared as much as we can be.0 -
Bitterly cold here today too, no snow but hard frost and we've flicked the central heating on just to get moving this morning. I think an indoor day except for our usual walks to keep fit (we both do a loop round the village that is almost 4 miles) and the stove will be lit earlier than usual. Thank goodness we harvest, womble and scrounge all the wood we can lay hands on through the year as it means we CAN burn what we need to when it's cold like this. Wrap up warm poppets and stay well xxx.0

Been snowing steadily here since about 8am. Looks like it's going to settle... I love being able to stay in when the weather is inclement! OH used to leave for work at 5.30 before retirement usually before the gritter had passed through, so really appreciates it. Commiserations to those of you who are having to cope with bad road conditions and as we say up here 'Gann canny'The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
