We booked with Premier Inns for a weekend in London. While I was making the booking on line, because we have an elderly dog whose health is dodgy, I decided to add the extra £18 optional charge for changing or cancelling the booking up to 1.00pm on the day of arrival.
Her health deteriorated significantly over the 10 days prior to our departure and we made the decision that we wouldn't go, as it wouldn't be fair to the dog or the dog sitter in the circumstances.
I was really surprised when I got my credit card statement this morning that not only was the accommodation cost fully refunded, but also the £18 cancellation 'insurance' which, to be honest, I thought would have been a fair price to pay for the refund!
I love it when a company surprises me pleasantly and thought I'd share the information with other people who might be thinking of booking hotel accommodation. They've won my loyalty.
The dog is fine, by the way!

Better is good enough.

The extra charge is not an insurance, it is just the difference between the flexible and non flexible rates. That is not to criticise PI though, they are good value hotels offering a quality product.
Glad to hear the dog is better0
