fitting a gas cooker?

buying a gas cooker next week, was looking at a Smeg, but Smeg say the fitting bayonet can not be directly behind the appliance?

The gap I have for the cooker is 60cm, the gas pipe comes up within that 60cm at the back, about 10cm from the right hand side.

I didn't know the fittings couldn't be behind the cooker, so now I have no idea what gas cooker I can buy that will be able to be fitted in the space I have available.

I don't want to buy a cooker and have the fitter refuse to fit it...any help please.

  • I'm sure the fitter would be able to do something with the pipework to make it work to the manufacturers instructions.

I thought so but looking at the smeg diagram, seems not as I have kitchen units both sides, can't see how the pipe work could be not behind the appliance?

Service voids behind your cabinets are more than enough to cater for this - remove the cabinet, modify the pipework then refit cabinet having put in sufficient access points in the side/back of cabinet to allow for hose to be connected to bayonet point.

  • If the cooker comes with hose why not connect yourself ? After just it just pushes on.

Because the hose will not be attached to the cooker. This has to be done by a Gas Safe Engineer.

  • And do they know/ have the equipment to test all the work once done to make sure there are no gas leaks?????

Why are people always giving such s**t advice on here when it comes to gas???

"Yeh connect it up yourself it will be fine, that small gas leak won't matter until you light a fag and blow the house up killing your wife and kids"
