Amex card

I've been a member of BA executive club for years and would like to have the BA Amex card to collect the miles on whatever I spend.

But I simply can't get accepted for the card. It's not due to bad credit as I have no issues there, it's all down to my address and the fact that I've worked and lived outside of the UK. So they ask me for some additional proof of ID:

Bank statement and utility bill - no problem
Certified copy of passport - big problem.

Amex provide detail of the certification that they need for my passport. It needs to be certified by a recognised authority such as a bank and must be worded a certain way.

No bank will now certify any document unless it's for their own services, and the post office will only certify it using wording that is not acceptable by Amex.

Result being that I cannot provided an acceptable certified copy of my passport.

Anyone else had this problem?

What alternatives do they give other than 'such as a bank'.

For a lot of purposes certification can be done by a solicitor - and they typically charge around £10 to do this as a one off service.

Did they specifically state that it was all down to that?

I haven't had any trouble with Amex despite those things.

I had to send in a "verified" copy of my passport too, I asked a friend who is a police officer.

Commissioner of Oaths or Public Notary, both often solicitors, will also do this for you and the standard price is something like £7.50 if its using wording you provide. If they have to devise appropriate wording then its much more
