Barclays overdraft limit

I have held a joint bank account with Barclays for at least 15 years and with management, have not used the overdraft facility, £700, we negotiated when the account was opened.
Due to a change in my circumstances at the end of July 2014 the account was overdrawn for 4 days a total charge of £3.00. I have just noticed that the following month Barclays increased the overdraft limit to £1700.00 - with no notification to me/us. Can they do this?
I am hoping to go into a branch tomorrow to get it reverted but would like to know where I stand.

And you can ask them to remove it.

You don't get charge for simply having an overdraft facility (£1,700 in your case currently). You do get charged for using your overdraft facility, and for using an unauthorised overdraft.
