Swapping front to rear is pointless, your not saving anything, you still get through as much rubber, your just prolonging the inevitable.

For winter you need as much grip as possible on the driven wheels and if the rears don't have enough grip GET NEW TYRES.

Strider, I didn't say the driven wheels do not have enough grip, the driven tyres at present still have plenty of grip, as pulling off in the wet doesn't create wheel spin. At present it seems the front driven tryes are wearing at twice the rate of the rear, yes at some point they will all require replacement, but now I'm thinking when that time comes, I'd rather do all 4 at once than 2 here and 2 there.

Exactly what I prefer to do, only my rears wear faster than the fronts, so I replace them when they're at the limit, then replace the fronts+rears next time around.
I don't mix them front/rear because the rear tyres wear more heavily on the inside edge (whilst the fronts wear mostly evenly), which would cause unpredictable handling if they were moved to the front, especially in the wet.
