Had a phone call from my wife this morning. She had had a call from these guys (we are with BT and in contract so not looking to move).
Their opening gambit was along the lines of "Hi, sorry we hadn't got back to you about setting up your free calls - if you've got a spare moment we can do it now". My wife hadn't set the original contract up so was cautious (not knowing if it was something I'd arranged), questioned them and was eventually told that we were on a marketing list. In other words they were trying to get us signed up - with an opening line like that it seems to me they were looking to catch people unawares thinking it was part of their existing contract that hadn't been processed properly.
Be careful folks!

If you don't want such marketing calls sign up to the Telephone Preference Service;

As for being "careful", I suggest not allowing anyone cold-calling you to sell you anything.0
