I put sealed things that won't attract vermin in a plastic box in the shed, and stuff that could attract vermin in a box in the hallway in front of the front door, behind the curtain, and put ice packs in it.

When it comes to party time bottles and cans that are outside get moved inside and put in a box filled with ice cubes.

The one Christmas it was really cold I put a trug bucket full of water outside with old pop bottles filled with gravel stood upright in it. Once it had frozen I removed the pop bottles (needed to add hot water to some to loosen them), then at party time I moved it inside and filled the holes with bottles of beer.

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

A large plastic toy box with lid kept outside in the garden and stocked with some icepacks will keep things cool. I'd be careful of using an insulated cooler bag in the garden for storing meat of any kind, although fine for dairy products. Somebody I knew put their turkey in one overnight on Christmas Eve and a fox came along, sniffed it out and tore the cooler bag to shreds to get at it. They had a rather deprived Christmas lunch !!

With sealable bags and boxes your bath in an unheated bathroom with cold water can help. Just keep the water refreshed and cold.

Like others have said use a box in the shed. I keep all my veg in there but I put a lid on to keep the mice off.
  • I use our unheated conservatory for storing drinks/veg and cheese as it's usually colder in there then the fridge anyway! :D
Now thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker :)
  • This thread reminded me of when I lived in college halls - if you kept stuff like butter & milk in the communal fridge it used to get pinched, so I banged a nail into the window sill and used it to hang a carrier bag with these bits in out of the window then closed the window on it. :D
Don’t try to keep up with the Jones’s. They are broke!

We did not get a fridge at all; almost all the first and second windows had carrier bags hanging out the windows throughout the autumn and spring terms. used to hang them over the handle; just has to remember to grab them before opening the window.

You could always cook the turkey late on Christmas Eve. The cooked bird can sit out quite happily overnight. It needs time to 'rest' after cooking, anyway.
After lunch, carve the remainder of the bird into big chunks and place in individual bags. Refrigerate. It is much easier to squash in several smaller bags than one big bag.

This method also means you can get a lie-in on Christmas Day.
